🌟Apostolic Faith Mission (AFM) Macedonia Fund🌟
Apostolic Faith Mission (AFM) Macedonia is located in U Section of Botshabelo Township in Bloemfontein in the Free State Province of South Africa. It lies east of Bloemfontein approximately 60 km away alongside N8 a national road leading to Lesotho which is about 80 km. The proximity of Botshabelo from Lesotho means that there are many Lesotho nationals some of whom have entered the country illegally who are unemployed or who work as shepherds and some as vendors whose children need some assistance with schooling and in some instances with food as well. The school nutrition programme run by the Department of Education is critical.
As the Faith Based Organization being the church we are passionate about reaching the community around us by intervening in their situation. We would like to improve their lives and the circumstances that they find themselves in.
Botshabelo is a poverty stricken area that has a very high rate of youth unemployment. Social ills , such as Gangsterism , drug abuse, teenage pregnancy and suicide committed by high school learners is the order of the day.
Fundraising Details
We as AFM Macedonia are hamstrung by lack of financial resources in order to make meaningful interventions in our local communities of Botshabelo in U Section. We are dealing with fencing of our premises in order to secure the projects that we will be implementing. This project is moving at a snail’s pace as we depend on the contributions of our members most of whom live on social grants. It is Important to install strong fencing in due to high crime rate. However, our intention Is ensure that the community becomes part and parcel of these intervention in order to instill a strong sense of ownership.
It is heart breaking to see our youth desperately trying to open car wash business all over the township. These are short lived in most cases due to a myriad of reasons chief among them is that usually the location is not strategic enough and there is a congestion of similar business close to each other. It is our idea that should these young people have access to information regarding available employment opportunities elsewhere, alternative business ideas and to different skills available from government agencies and civil society organization their potential would be unleashed.
🌟AFM - Our Task
We are also seeking to assist the community by easing the pressure from the long queues when they collect their medicines from the clinic. The clinic is our next door neighbour just few metres away. It becomes a challenge on cold and wet days as the people will be standing in long queues that reach some few meters to the outside of the gate of the clinic.
Poverty and hunger are a reality to many households of Botshabelo and as expected it impacts mostly the children and women. Having realized this situation during our missions to the community we started a feeding scheme that happens only on Sunday. However, this programme is often suspended due to lack of funds or food donations from our members. Attempts to get help from local supermarkets have not been successful to date. It is our intention to start an after care that should be tied up to a feeding scheme. This would help not only to take children and youth off the streets but also to improve their academic performance and to instill love for education.
- Small scale food garden [Greenhouse Tunnel R50 000]
We would like to address these issues by focusing on small scale agricultural activities where community members can have their own vegetable tunnels for a start and with time they can move to hydroponics.
- Internet Center [40 feet office container @ R50 000 + 10 Computers @R R40 000 + 12 Office Desks (Home Made) R6 000 + Chairs @ R5 000 + Wi-Fi @ R10 000 per annum
Young people need to be equipped with different skills especially on IT given that we are in the 4IR era. A computer centre would help them to also access information through internet. Non accredited short courses could be offered to a limited number at a time.
- Medicine Pick up Point [Fencing @ R30 000 + Air Conditioner @ R13 000]
One of the challenges that the community is faced with relates to health issues. There are usually long queues. In this regard we have applied to the National Department of Health for us to become the medicine collection point in the community. We are working on compliance. We need to buy a air conditioner we already have a scanner and a spacious room for storage.
- After Care
On Sundays we run a feeding scheme from our coffers when funds permit. Our idea is to have the feeding scheme at least twice per week so that we can implement after care and space for learners to be assisted with home works.
